Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the New Zealand passenger rail industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to work as a train manager and deliver safe and efficient customer services to people travelling on the rail network.

The qualification is for people intending to enter the passenger rail industry or people already working in the industry who wish to move into a train manager role.

Graduates will be capable of working under limited supervision to carry out the duties of a train manager on board passenger trains operating on the New Zealand rail network.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply knowledge of standard operating procedures within the rail environment, and maintain the safety of passengers and people working on or near the train.
- Provide passengers with the information and assistance they require to complete their intended journey.
- Operate communication equipment, train and network equipment to ensure service performance expectations are met.
- Respond to emergencies and maintain the security of all people, trains and equipment on the rail network.
Education pathways
There are no specific higher level qualifications for passenger services roles in this sector, however graduates of this qualification who are accepted by a rail operator as a trainee driver can progress to the New Zealand Certificate in Rail Operations (Train Driver) (Level 4) with strands in Electric Multiple Units, and Locomotive [Ref: 2886].

Graduates can also consider further qualifications in customer service, hospitality or frontline management.
