Strategic Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have advanced maritime electro-technical skills to electro-technical officer standard under the Maritime NZ Seafarer Certification and Operational Limits Framework and corresponding roles in naval vessels. The electro-technical officer will be expected to operate unsupervised for extended periods in sole charge of complex electrical/electronic systems.

The qualification is intended for new entrants to the industry or electro-technical ratings intending to progress to roles as electro-technical officer. It is also suitable for shore-based electrical engineers intending to begin a career at sea.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

- Apply leadership, teamwork and communication skills to lead electro-technical work on board vessels.
- Monitor the operation of electrical and electronic shipboard systems.
- Manage the operation of generators and distribution systems for shipboard electricity reticulation.
- Operate computers and computer networks on vessels for the control of on-board systems.
- Manage the maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment including monitoring systems, automatic control devices and protective devices.
- Manage the maintenance and repair of automation and control systems of the main propulsion and auxiliary machinery.
- Maintain and repair bridge navigation equipment and ship communication systems.
- Maintain and repair electrical, electronic, and control systems of deck machinery and cargo-handling equipment.
- Maintain and repair control and safety hotel equipment.
- Ensure compliance with marine pollution prevention requirements.
- Lead safe and sustainable working practices, effective communication and emergency response on board a vessel.
- Direct firefighting operations on board a vessel.
- Operate survival craft and rescue boats.
- Maintain vessel security and provide on board medical care.
Education pathways
This, and the corresponding Maritime NZ Electro- technical Officer (ETO) certificate of competency, are the most senior maritime electro-technical qualifications.

The qualification builds on the:
- New Zealand Certificate in Maritime Crewing (Level 4) with strands in Deck Crew, Electro-technology, and Engineering [Ref: 2511].

Graduates may progress to further study in electro-technology.

Graduates of this qualification who choose to move into general marine engineering or command roles may pathway to higher level qualifications in marine engineering or vessel operations.

Completion of this qualification is a pre-requisite to applying for a Maritime NZ Electro technical Officer Certificate - refer to Maritime NZ for details of the award of this certificate.
Employment pathways
Graduates will have the skills and knowledge required to work as:
- Electro-Technical Officer on a ship of any propulsion power in any operating area.

Graduates may also move to electro-technical jobs on shore but will need to complete the registration requirements of the Electrical Workers Registration Board.
