Strategic Purpose Statement
The qualification is for learners who wish to enhance their existing knowledge and skills in order to develop application programs on various platforms (business intelligence and databases, robotics and internet of things, desktop, web and cloud, and mobile) and focusing on gaining a specialisation a particular platform. The qualification aims to meet contemporary and future workplace demands for flexible software developers and collaborators who create people-centred software applications while considering issues of sustainablility, financial viability, and profitablility.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Diploma in Software Development are able to: (a) Demonstrate specialised technical and theoretical knowledge with depth in software requirements, software design, software construction, software testing, and software maintenance in the development of software applications for a range of platforms. (b) Create applications to solve problems using appropriate software design and construction processes and techniques, from initial project inception through to testing and completion. (c) Select, adapt, justify and apply a range of design methods to a range of software construction problems. (d) Demonstrate advanced specialist skills in software development including the production of secure solutions on the platform of their choice, including desktop, web, cloud and mobile. (e) Defend software development decisions in a persuasive manner, exhibiting effective written and oral communication skills. (f) Reflect on their performance in terms of their softskills with reference to personality traits, social graces, language including elocution, personal work habits, interpersonal skills, managing and leading people, and the importance of relationships with others.
Education pathways
Graduates will be prepared to undertake higher-level studies and are able to apply for enrolment onto Level 8 qualifications, subject to meeting other requirements.
Graduates of the Diploma in Software Development could apply for enrolment on Postgraduate Diploma in Computing and aligned qualifications and in some cases a Master of Computing type qualification, or equivalent qualifications.
Employment pathways
Graduates of the Diploma in Software Development can seek employment opportunities as programmers, software developers, and software engineers in a variety of industries. These opportunities can be highly lucrative, especially in growth areas where there is an undersupply of able candidates.
Graduates of the Web and Cloud Development strand can seek employment opportunities as Web/Cloud Developers and Web/Cloud Programmers in high demand areas. Graduates will possess cutting-edge Web Development knowledge, high level skills in web and cloud development with security-conscience knowledge. This will produce web and cloud applications that will provide lucrative opportunities and effective employment pathways.
Graduates of the Desktop Development strand can seek employment opportunities as software developers, software engineers and programmers in a variety of roles. The knowledge and skills acquired are the necessary building blocks for lifelong learning for a developer. This will support the graduate in their undertakings.
Graduates of the Mobile Development strand can seek employment opportunities as software developers in the growing area of mobile development. These employment opportunities can be highly lucrative and currently the demand for graduates is not being met.
Graduates of the Robotics and Internet of Things strand can seek employment opportunities as robotics developers in cutting-edge area. Graduates will be capable of producing a range of different solutions to technology problems. These skills will enable effective employment pathways.
Graduates of the Business Intelligence and Databases can seek employment opportunities as database developers, business and system analysts. Entry Requirements
A candidate for admission to this programme of study shall have attained the age of 18 years old on or before the first day of study, and:

* a diploma in computing or information technology-related field at Level 6 or equivalent qualification
OR
* be able to demonstrate at least three years equivalent practical or professional experience in computing, software development, or IT-related field. The suitability of the applicant will be assessed and decided by the ATMC Academic Board

English language requirements
As a minimum those with English as a second language must have an overall IELTS score of at least 6.0 (Academic) with no band score lower than 5.5. This must be gained in one exam within the previous two year period.

Credits
