Strategic Purpose Statement
The Bachelor of Nursing - Te Tohu Paetahi Tapuhi is a professional qualification designed to prepare skilled, culturally safe, competent, confident, ethical reflective practitioners equipped with recognised professional knowledge, attitudes and values for professional nursing practice. The programme of study leading towards the qualification, aims to provide students with the foundation knowledge and professional skills that enable them to demonstrate the competencies of a beginning registered nurse and meet the Nursing Council of New Zealand requirements for registration as a registered nurse.

With a balance of theory and work integrated practice graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing - Te Tohu Paetahi Tapuhi programme will meet NCNZ criteria for entry to practice as a registered nurse. This programme will enable graduates to seek employment opportunities within a range of health settings regionally, nationally and internationally.

Graduates from this programme of study will demonstrate competence to practice at an entry level in all NCNZ Standards of Competence for registered nurses (2025). This qualification will enable them to use nursing knowledge and complex nursing judgement to holistically assess health needs of individuals, whānau families, iwi and communities. They will implement the provision of nursing care within a Te Tiriti o Waitangi/The Treaty of Waitangi informed bi-cultural context and empower people to manage sustainable health outcomes.

Graduates will be able to; respond to the health needs of diverse cultures applying a therapeutic caring relationship; capable of adapting to an evolving health sector; and skilled at navigating nursing care within an inter-professional setting. Finally, graduates will be committed to improving quality standards for nursing practice through exploring evidence based research, engaging in independent learning and reflecting on practice.
Graduate profile
After successful completion of this Programme of Studies Bachelor of Nursing - Te Tohu Paetahi Tapuhi, graduates will have the skills, knowledge and attributes to be able to:

1. Establish a functional knowledge of working in partnership with Tāngata Whenua guided by the principles of kawawhakaruruhau/cultural safety and whānau, hapū, iwi nursing care underpinned by Mātauranga Māori and the articles of the Treaty of Waitangi, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi to promote social justice, equity and inclusion.
2. Provide and/or facilitate the provision of culturally safe nursing care within a collaborative holistic framework that incorporates knowledge, concepts and world views of Tāngata Tiriti to promote equity and inclusion recognising human difference and diversity in a range of settings.
3. Work collaboratively within a range of health care settings, and contribute to the multi-interprofessional healthcare team, providing support and guidance, including accountability for direction and delegation, in the provision of equitable health outcomes for individuals, whānau, hapū, iwi and hapori/ communities across the life span.
4. Underpin professional nursing practice knowledge and skills with science, critical thinking, reflection and evidenced-based research to inform comprehensive health assessment, determine health needs, develop differential diagnosis, plan interventions and evaluate health outcomes.
5. Ensure provision of professional nursing practice that embeds a caring ethical framework, and integrates communication strategies to effect therapeutic relationships with individuals, whānau, hapū, iwi and hapori/communities.
6. Establish professional literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy and the ability to identify own learning needs and a commitment to continuing professional development to become lifelong independent learners.
7. Exhibit nursing knowledge and skills that portrays confident, competent, accountable, sustainable and responsible nursing practice that meets legal and ethical parameters of the nursing profession directed by the Nursing council of New Zealand's Standards for registered nurses.
Education pathways
Following successful completion of the Bachelor of Nursing- Te Tohu Paetahi Tapuhi -
programme students will become candidates to sit NCNZ state examination leading to
registration as a registered nurse. Graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing - Te Tohu
Paetahi Tapuhi - will be eligible for entry to higher level study at masters or post
graduate level.
Employment pathways
The - Bachelor of Nursing - Te Tohu Paetahi Tapuhi specifically aimed to prepare
graduates for registration as a registered nurse at a beginning level. Graduates of the
Bachelor of Nursing - Te Tohu Paetahi Tapuhi - programme will be able to pursue
employment and career opportunities within a range of health care settings, including
primary, secondary and tertiary health care settings.
Entry Requirements
For domestic applicants under 20 years old:
* University Entrance as per New Zealand Qualification Authority specifications (highly recommended that one approved subject be science or a related discipline) OR
* Evidence of recent (within 5 years) study at Level 4 or higher on the NZQF.
For applicants 20 years old and over:
* Demonstrated academic ability (at NZQA Level 4 or equivalent, within the last 5 years) to undertake the undergraduate nursing degree and have the ability to succeed through personal attributes, work and life experience.
Applicants who have completed an approved foundation, bridging or tertiary introductory programme in Health at Level 4, with 60% or higher in all modules will be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Nursing programme.

Students who have a record of convictions will be considered for entry on the basis of:
* The recency of the convictions
* The seriousness of the convictions
* The ability of the student to be accepted for placements and therefore completion of the qualification.

English requirements
If English is not your first language, we want to make sure that you will be successful in your chosen programme of study. Please provide a result from an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Occupational English Test (OET) test.

If you are a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident, complete an Admission and Enrolment form and Toi Ohomai will contact you regarding a free assessment.

If you are not a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent resident, book an IELTS or OET test through Toi Ohomai or an alternative examination Centre or in your home country.
IELTS scores used must be taken from a single IELTS test report form and are valid for two years from the date of the test.

What if I have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance?
The English Language requirements for this programme are higher than the minimum set by NZQA, therefore; applicants who have achieved NCEA Level 3 University Entrance may be required to provide evidence of English Language skills.

Confirmation of acceptance of the Bachelor of Nursing - Te Tohu Paetahi Tapuhi - is subject to submission of the following documents prior to the start of the programme:
* Current comprehensive first aid certificate
* Evidence of immunity as identified by the school of nursing and the Ministry of Health
* letter regarding physical and mental health status from a GP or a Practice Nurse

and Professional Practice. Implicit within each of these areas is that; the consumer of
health is at the centre of the care; nursing practice is underpinned by science along
with a hauora Māori view; and the art of nursing is endorsed with critical thinking,
reflection, research, embedding of holistic comprehensive assessment framework that
caters for a changing healthy reality.
