Strategic Purpose Statement
The Open Polytechnic's Bachelor of Library and Information Studies prepares students to work in a wide range of specialist roles within the rapidly transforming library, archives, records and information management sectors, and beyond. They will be confident, culturally competent, proactive and collaborative practitioners who enjoy working with people in a dynamic, future-focused discipline that makes a significant contribution to the quality of the lives of New Zealanders, and to the cultural, social, research and economic outcomes of the whole country.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
1. Provide culturally responsive library and information services and collections, recognising and applying the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, understanding Te Ao Māori, biculturalism and indigenous knowledge paradigms.
2. Provide culturally relevant library and information services and collections to enhance the lives of Pasifika and other cultural groups in in New Zealand.
3. Collaborate and communicate to analyse individual, organisational and community needs, and to design, deliver and evaluate appropriate library and information services, programmes, collections and systems to facilitate access to and use of information, life-long learning and multiple literacies.
4. Facilitate the creation, organisation and dissemination of new knowledge.
5. Search for, critically evaluate, contextualise and use information in diverse formats and locations.
6. Develop leadership and management strategies to advocate for and promote ethical and effective evidence-based information solutions within communities and organisations, for open, equitable access to information.
Education pathways
Graduates of the Bachelor of Library and Information Studies programme will be well prepared to enter postgraduate Diploma, Masters and PhD qualifications in related areas such as information management, education, management and community development. For example, graduates may wish to pursue a Master of Information Management, a Master of Public Policy, or Postgraduate Diploma in Education. These kinds of interdisciplinary postgraduate qualifications offered by New Zealand Universities recognise the Bachelor of Library and Information Studies as satisfying educational entry requirements. Graduates may also choose to take specialist postgraduate qualifications in library studies, archive and heritage management and records and information management offered in other countries.
Employment pathways
Graduates of the Bachelor of Library and Information Studies may find employment in a wide range of library and information management roles.
The Bachelor of Library and Information Studies has been designed to ensure that graduates who wish to do so can obtain professional registration with the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (LIANZA) or certified membership of Records and Information Management Professionals Australasia (RIMPA), once an additional Professional Training Plan and a 12 month period of mentoring has been completed.To find out more about employment opportunities click on the CareersNZ logo, then the provider who offers this qualification.
Entry Requirements
Applicants much be at least 17 years old at the start of the programme and have either: New Zealand University entrance; passes in relevant Level 4 New Zealand Certificate / Diploma qualifications considered appropriate by the programme leader; or an overseas qualification assessed to be equivalent to these by the programme leader.
Applicants who have attained the age of 20 years and do not hold the minimum entry requirements will be eligible to be enrolled where their previous educational, or life experience indicates that they have a reasonable likelihood of success.
If English is the not the applicant's first language, candidates will need an IELTS (Academic) score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5, or equivalent.

Level

Credits

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
