Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of this qualification is to allow learners to develop and/or broaden their expertise in IT by studying a field suited to their current experience and/or qualifications. The qualification is designed on an individual basis allowing learners to select courses to suit their specific needs, interests, and professional development goals.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology will have built on their existing knowledge base, skills and professionalism by developing technical and conceptual thinking in a specialist area of information technology. They will have the ability to:
- Implement appropriate software application-based information technology solutions to address identified workplace requirements
- Operate knowledgeably, productively and professionally to produce specified outcomes in a rapidly changing information technology environment
Education pathways
The Graduate Certificate in Information Technology will allow learners to pursue study at an advanced undergraduate level. It will be suitable for learners who have attained a bachelor's degree or those who are able to demonstrate equivalent practical, professional or educational experience. Learners successfully completing the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology may progress to the Graduate Diploma in Information Technology or to postgraduate study. Entry is open to degree graduates, with the exception of graduates from the Open Polytechnic Bachelor of Information Technology. Subject to the regulations of the award, those who have been able to demonstrate equivalent practical, professional or educational experience of an appropriate kind may be granted admission.
Courses in this programme will consist of Level 6 and Level 7 courses from the Bachelor of Information Technology, which gained approval and accreditation from NZQA in 2016.
Learners may credit some work or study experience into the Graduate Certificate in Information Technology. The credit available will be determined on a case by case basis, and will be limited to 20 credits (one course).
Employment pathways
The Graduate Certificate in Information Technology will provide students with a range of IT specialist skills and practices in a chosen specialist field. Entry Requirements
Academic Entry requirements:
An Undergraduate Degree (with the exception of the Open Polytechnic's Bachelor of Information Technology), or equivalent.
Domestic language entry requirements:
If English or Māori is the not the applicant's first language, candidates will need an IELTS academic score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5, or equivalent.
International English language entry requirements:
Students without prior IT knowledge, qualifications or experience may be required to complete other courses prior to enrolling in the Graduate Certificate.

Credits
