Strategic Purpose Statement
The aim of the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (SecondaryEducation) is to equip ākonga with a recognised, flexible and applied teaching qualification in secondaryeducation. Practical courses connect theory with practice and are strongly aligned with sector needs to ensure work-ready graduates equipped with skills and knowledge required for teaching positions or for further study at postgraduate level.
Graduate profile
Graduates of this programme will be able to:1. apply an in-depth understanding and knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, te reo Māori and tikanga Māori in secondary education settings to support Māori learners to enjoy educational success as Māori;2. utilise skills for engaging appropriately and effectively with rangatahi, their parents, families and whānau, as well as colleagues, stakeholder professionals and external organisations;3. utilise current research and critical reflection to analyse effective practices to continually improve design for learning and teaching during practicum in secondary education settings; 4. apply professional learning and collaboration within and beyond their secondary education context

Graduates of the programme will be able to enter postgraduate study in areas related to education.
Employment pathways
This programme leads to employment in secondary education and other teaching settings, and related professions. Entry Requirements
Applicants must hold a Bachelor degree or a recognised equivalent at Level 7 or higher on the NZQF, in an area that is relevant to secondary teaching.All applicants must demonstrate an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to acceptance in the programme. Ways in which this may be demonstrated, besides by New Zealand University Entrance, are detailed in the current Teaching Council Initial Teacher Education Requirements.Applicants must meet the Teaching Council's 'character and fitness' criteria and the requirements of the Children's Act 2014. Entry into the programme is subject to a selection process which includes Police vetting, confidential referee reports, personal declarations, an interview and a literacy and numeracy assessment. Credits
