Strategic Purpose Statement
1. To develop competent youth practitioners who understand the body of knowledge that underpins youth development, are able to apply this knowledge to practice and who have the critical analysis, evidence based and problem solving skills that are required for independent, ethical practice. 2. To develop self awareness and reflective practitioner skills, critical thought, research and evaluation abilities, independent and self-directed study and to prepare students for postgraduate learning and practice. Preparing people to enter into the youth work profession requires training and education that develops competent practitioners able to fulfil youth development practice roles. The Bachelor of Youth Development programme is particularly aimed at meeting the needs of people currently working in the youth development field who need a degree level qualification to support their role.
Graduate profile
Graduates will be able to:
1. Integrate and apply understanding of theories and emerging research about youth development and youth identity formation to work with youth in a positive development context.
2. Critically examine the political, sociological and cultural influences shaping young people.
3. Establish and maintain quality inclusive relationships with young people.
4. Work effectively in developing culturally appropriate collaboration with tangata whenua and a diverse range of people.
5. Integrate and apply the key principles of the Youth Workers Code of Ethics and relevant legislation to demonstrate competent ethical practice in accordance to relevant legislation.
6. Apply leadership skills (coaching, mentoring, etc.) to their work as youth practitioners.
7. Critically examine, and apply research and evidence to youth development practice.
8. Work safely and collaboratively within organisational policies and procedures.
9. Work collaboratively in inter-professional contexts and multidisciplinary teams.
10. Practice and competently demonstrate intellectual independence, critical thinking and analytical rigor.
11. Synthesise key competencies in professionalism and self-awareness and apply these competently in their own practice.
12. Engage in professional supervision, development, practice self-care and express a variety of mechanisms to enhance further professional development.
13. Responds appropriately, professionally, and competently to issues of safety, crisis and risk.
14. Design, develop, deliver and evaluate youth development initiatives.

Employment pathways
Graduates are able to gain entry into positions as youth development practitioners working primarily with young people. This degree prepares them for professional youth development practice and leadership roles within government; non-government and faith-based agencies.
