Strategic Purpose Statement |
The aim of the Diploma in Foreign Going Master or Chief is to prepare the student academically to progress to the level of overall command of a vessel. The student will develop specialist knowledge in the areas of safety of life at sea, safety of property at sea, and the integrity of the marine environment, crew, cargo, passengers and will hold the position of responsibility of managing the ship's records and administration. Essential analytical and problem solving skills to the level of command for either a foreign going ship or managerial position ashore.

Graduates of this programme will be able to:
Master's strand Graduates will be able to: * Apply knowledge of ship operations on a foreign-going ship * Manage the planning and conduct of a passage and determine position on a foreign-going ship in any operating area. * Manage ship operations in port and apply commercial principles to achieve commercial success on board a ship or in a shore based maritime environment. * Apply strategies to ensure protection of the marine environment. * Apply effective leadership and demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour, in a socially and culturally appropriate manner when leading a team. * Apply knowledge of risk and human factors in a marine environment. Chief's strand Graduates will be able to: * Apply knowledge of marine engineering fundamentals to defined and applied marine engineering procedures, processes, systems or methodologies. * Undertake research for a broadly defined engineering scenario using analytical tools appropriate to the maritime industry. * Design solutions for maritime technology problems with consideration for risk assessment, health and safety, culture, human factors and the environment. * Apply leadership and management skills appropriate to a complex and dynamic maritime domain. * Demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour, in a socially and culturally appropriate manner when leading a team. * Apply commercial principles to achieve success on board a ship or in a shore based maritime environment. |

Entry Requirements
Entry to the programme is restricted to: a) those students holding a Watchkeeper deck Certificate of Competency issued by Maritime New Zealand or an overseas qualification recognised by MNZ as being equivalent, Or b) those students who have completed the academic components of the NZ2515 New Zealand Diploma in Nautical Science programme, Or c) those students holding a Marine Engineer Class 3 Certificate of Competency issued by Maritime New Zealand or an overseas qualification recognised by MNZ as being equivalent, Or d) those students who have completed the academic components of the NZ2514 New Zealand Diploma in Marine Engineering programme English Language Entry Requirements Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicant whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of their English language competency. English Language Requirements for International Students International students are required to meet the minimum English language requirements for this level programme as detailed on the following NZQA webpages: here And here Selection Criteria Places will be offered to students meeting the entry criteria on the basis of the order of confirmed course booking until such time as the course is deemed full. Students will be informed of the Maritime New Zealand health and fitness requirements for issuing a Certificate of Competency Licence.
