Strategic Purpose Statement
Graduates of this programme will have the skills, attitude and knowledge to work as a nurse. They will have developed the nursing knowledge and decision making skills built through evidence based practice and critical thinking within the socio political context of health in Northland.
Graduate profile
The Bachelor of Nursing graduate will: * Enable health and wellness through the application of primary health care concepts that empower the client; (individual, whanau or community); and address health care inequities * Implement appropriate culturally responsive nursing care that is congruent with te Tiriti o Waitangi and relevant to the specific health needs of Northland te Tai Tokerau, situating this within a national and international context; * Utilise thorough assessment skills and communication skills and clinical reasoning to continually develop, refine and validate practice within professional ethical, moral and legal frameworks; * Critique and utilise best evidence to inform and continually develop own nursing practice; * Manage nursing practice safely within multiple contexts, based on current nursing knowledge, research and reflective practice. This will be demonstrated by culturally safe, caring compassionate and competent practice, in cooperation collaboration with other health professionals; * Develop Engage in a commitment to ongoing personal professional development.

Entry Requirements
Educational Criteria: Completed NCEA level 3 with University Entrance, including at least 14 credits in an English language rich subject, e.g., English, history, art history, classics, geography, economics; and 14 credits in a science subject: e.g. biology, chemistry, physical education. Alternative Educational Criteria Minimum 'B' passes in every course of in a relevant Level 4 Academic Foundation Programme qualification, e.g. New Zealand Certificate in Study and Career Preparation (Level 4) or evidence of recent successful study in other relevant courses at tertiary level or documented, verifiable evidence of relevant work life experience (usually the equivalent of two year's full time) that indicates the ability to meet the requirements of this degree. Such evidence would normally include details of roles/responsibilities undertaken, interpersonal skills, other achievements and referee statements. Admission under this provision requires an interview with and approval from the Pathway Manager - Nursing or delegate.

Additional Requirements: The following are required if you are accepted into the programme: Each successful applicant is required to complete and return a NZ Police 'Authorisation to Disclose Information' form with their application. If accepted into the programme, the form will be sent by Northland Polytechnic to the Police Licensing and Vetting Service and returned in confidence to the Pathway Manager - Nursing. Part-time students are required to complete a further police vetting form three years into the programme. Personal Requirements: All applicants must: have health clearances, vaccinations and immunisations at the student's expense to meet the policies of the various clinical practice institutions and agencies (if accepted onto the programme); have a current first aid certificate (which covers Unit Standards 6400, 6401, 6402); have a level of physical and emotional health commensurate as to achieve the required nursing practice competencies; provide the names of 2 persons who are prepared to act as referees; be able to read and write unassisted (because of the requirement to independently and accurately read and write case notes and other documentation when in clinical practice). Applicants must be able to understand, interpret and speak English, at a level that is safe in clinical practice - the inability to do so would create risk or harm to others. Note that students may request, however, the use of a 'reader/writer' for examinations in the instance of temporary disability.

English Language Requirements Where English, Te Reo Māori or NZ Sign Language is not a student's first language, they student is are also required to provide evidence of English Language skills, regardless of residency status or citizenship, as listed below: IELTS 6.5 Academic (6.5 in each band, achieved in one test) or accepted international equivalence.
