Strategic Purpose Statement
Graduates will develop advanced knowledge and skills in an area of specialist practice to work effectively and collaboratively within a social services, education, health or Maori development area. Graduates will develop a critical awareness of their practice and the social context in which it exits. Graduates will be able to specialise in one of the five endorsement areas available for study in the programme. Specialist areas include Te Reo Maori Development, Adult Education, Social Work, Counselling and Maori Counselling. In addition graduates who complete the specified modules within the programme could exit with the award of the Diploma in Te Reo Rangatira or the Diploma in Adult Education or the Diploma in Social Work (incorporating National Diploma in Social Work) or the Diploma in Counselling (incorporating the National Diploma in Counselling) or the Diploma in Te Whiuwhiu o te Hau (Maori Counselling) (incorporating the National Diploma in Counselling). An early childhood education pathway is also available within this degree for Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) graduates.
Graduate profile
Graduates of the Bachelor of Applied Social Science will be prepared for career opportunities and practice in a range of social and community services.

The degree will also assist graduates to develop transferable skills essential for successful participation and leadership roles in the workplace.
The writing, discussion and research skills included in the programme will enable graduates to be prepared for post graduate study.

In addition, a graduate of the BAppSocSci (Counselling) will be able to:
* demonstrate well consolidated counselling practice framed by an integrated practice model, the New Zealand Association of Counsellors' Code of Ethics and drawing on a well-grounded understanding of at least two counselling theories
* actively reflect on own counselling practice
* demonstrate an ability to incorporate theoretical and research based writing into own practice
* demonstrate well developed qualities of client centeredness, such as empathy, genuineness and respect, in their counselling practice in one to one, whānau/family and group counselling situations
* demonstrate the implementation of contextualised knowledge of the social, political and cultural aspects of counselling
* integrate knowledge, skills and practice in relation to counselling within an agency
* demonstrate an intentional and appropriate use of self within counselling relationships
* demonstrate an ability to address personal issues that impact on or arise from practice and manage these effectively
Education pathways
Graduates of the BAppSocSc (Counselling) will be positioned to pathway into postgraduate programmes at Wintec such as the Postgraduate Certificate in Health and Social Practice, Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Supervision, Postgraduate Diploma in Health and Social Practice and the Postgraduate Diploma in Health and Social Practice (Professional Supervision). Graduates will also be eligible to apply for entry into Masters programmes within Wintec and at other tertiary education providers.
Employment pathways
Graduates of the BAppSocSc (Counselling) may gain employment in the social services in areas that require counsellors, such as mental health agencies, private practices, community agencies, or workplace support. Entry Requirements
Minimum of 60 credits NCEA Level 2 across 4 subjects including English or equivalent or 42 credits NCEA Level 3 across 3 subjects or equivalent or NCEA University Entrance or equivalent or relevant qualifications. Must demonstrate reasonable likelihood of success. Internationals IELTS Score of 7.5 in all bands. Registration with Social Workers Registration Board requires demonstration of a least 7.0 score in each of the listening, reading, writing and speaking bands.
