Strategic Purpose Statement |
Graduates will have built on skills gained in the Certificate in ESOL First Steps (Level 1 Introductory) and gained enhanced introductory communications skills in the four areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening and be able to demonstrate the ability to recognise and use basic English sound and stress patterns; understand simple spoken information and instructions; participate in simple conversations and transactions related to personal and familiar topics learnt language patterns (e.g. daily routines, introducing oneself and others and telling the time); read with assistance simple texts to obtain details and practical information of life experiences, giving instructions and directions; complete simple predictable forms; write with guidance simple information texts on personal and familiar topics; use basic ICT skills with assistance; an understanding of appropriate study skills. Graduates may pathway to the Certificate in ESOL Development (Level 2 Elementary) or Certificate in ESOL Progression (Level 3) (Intermediate)

Entry Requirements |
Open Entry. Selection criteria: attend an interview and test to establish English language skill level, demonstration of likelihood of success. Internationals must have Immigration Service of NZ documentation verifying eligibility to study in New Zealand. Internationals IELTS subject to placement test to establish candidate's level of language competency.

The credit value relates to the size of the qualification. One credit equates to ten hours of learning. One year's full-time study at a provider is usually 120 credits, but if you are studying part-time or in the work place the credit value may vary.
