Māori

sectionmaori

Aotearoa is the only country in the world to recognise indigenous knowledge as part of its qualification system.

NZQA's role in this area includes working with Māori stakeholders to develop and maintain national standards and qualifications based on Māori knowledge and skills.

Te Rautaki Māori (PDF, 1001KB), Our Māori Strategy (PDF, 985KB), is our guide to supporting increased Māori participation and successful achievement in education. NZQA is implementing this strategy with advice and support from Ngā Kaitūhono and the Māori Economic Development Forum.

Māori qualifications

Field Maori is one of the 17 classification fields for the Directory of Assessment Standards. The field Māori section has more than 20 qualifications and 600 unit standards registered.

This field covers a diverse range of areas that reflect a growing demand by industry, Māori communities and educators for formal recognition of Māori skills and knowledge. For more information see Māori Qualifications.

Māori providers

Māori providers can tailor specific programmes to work towards a field Māori qualification, use them to access against existing Māori programmes or incorporate them into mainstream courses.

Learners

Achieving credits in field Māori can provide a pathway to other national qualifications registered on the NZQF.

If you already have existing skills and knowledge in te ao Māori, you may be able to get credits for these. For more information see assessment of prior learning
