Zero fee teaching IQAs

On 14 September 2022 the Government announced that teachers who meet eligibility criteria can apply to have their overseas teaching qualifications evaluated by NZQA free of charge.
Who can apply
You can apply for a zero-fee teaching IQA if you:
- completed your teacher training in New Zealand and have gained additional qualifications overseas that require evaluation for Novopay/Edpay salary assessment
Salary assessment information on the Edpay website (for school teachers).
Or - completed your teacher training overseas (including teachers already in New Zealand) and require evaluation for New Zealand teaching registration and employment purposes.
What evidence do you need?
If you completed your teacher training in New Zealand, you must provide a letter from Novopay/Edpay salary assessment requesting an evaluation of your additional qualification/s.
If you completed your teacher training overseas, you must provide:
- evidence that you hold a bachelor’s degree or higher teaching qualification, relevant to the sector (Early Childhood Education, Primary or Secondary) in which you intend to teach
OR
- evidence of either current overseas teacher registration (or equivalent) OR current employment as a teacher in a school or early learning setting.
If teaching registration is compulsory in the country where you trained, please provide evidence of your overseas teaching registration.
Teaching Council of New Zealand requirements
The Teaching Council of New Zealand Aotearoa makes the final decision on whether an individual meets its requirements for teacher registration.
You are expected to meet all their requirements.

To apply for a zero fee teaching IQA you will need to submit an application through our online web portal.
To do this you will need to:
- create an account
- provide information and evidence of your eligibility
- provide information and evidence of your teaching qualification(s) that you want evaluated.
