Online application for extension to consent to assess for schools
This user guide is intended to support online school users during the application process for extension of consent to assess against standards.
Extension of consent to assess for schools
A school or wharekura must be granted consent to assess before it can assess learners against standards on the NZQF. In most cases, the initial grant of consent to assess is for all standards in the Base Scope of Consent to Assess for Schools (BSCS).
Schools or wharekura wishing to assess against standards beyond the scope of their existing consent must apply to NZQA.
About the Application
There are five sections in the application. You must complete each section before progressing to the next. Each section must be fully completed before submitting the application to NZQA for assessment.
- Section 1: Contact details
- Section 2: Domain, subfield, and field consents
- Section 3: Standard consents
- Section 4: Supporting documents
- Section 5: Comments
At any time, you can delete the application or return to School applications. If you return to School applications, you can resume filling out the application at a later stage. Any sections you have completed will not be lost.
The Application Process
When you submit this application, you will receive an auto generated email quoting an NZQA reference number. If you need to email or speak to a member of staff, please use this reference number.
You will be notified when your application has passed through pre-assessment. Pre-assessment determines if an application has sufficient information to be processed further. If an application has insufficient documentation it will be returned. Providers are able to redevelop their applications and reapply.
After pre-assessment, your application is allocated to an advisor in the Service Delivery team who may contact you to discuss your application further.
The approval process takes approximately 20 working days. After this time, you should receive confirmation of the extension of consent to assess. These standards will be included in your school's list of standards for which you hold consent and you may begin assessing students. You will receive an invoice for $200 plus GST once your application has been processed and approved. There may be additional charges for Level 4 Field Māori applications.
Please direct any queries about this application to our SQAL team. Remember to include the NZQA reference number on all correspondence.

Section 1:Contact details |

Section 2:To apply for domain, subfield and field consents |
The classification system for the Directory of Assessment Standards (DAS) comprises three tiers: fields, subfields, and domains. Choose Yes for this section if you are seeking consent to assess for an entire field, subfield, or domain. You must provide a valid rationale to support the request for the broad consent to assess, and provide rigorous documentation in support of the application. Choose No if you only wish to apply for specific standards. |
Section 3:To apply for standard consents |
Add any individual standards that you are seeking consent to assess against and that DO NOT belong to any field, subfield or domain selected in Section 2. |
