Strategic Purpose Statement
This qualification is designed to satisfy the completion of the academic requirements for applicants seeking to become Chartered Accountants with the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) or to become Certified Practising Accountants with CPA Australia.
The academic requirements to become a Chartered Accountant with NZICA (CAANZ) or a Certified Practising Accountant with CPA Australia involve the completion of three years of degree level study amounting to 360 credits. There is also a requirement that a body of knowledge defined in the terms of learning outcomes for ten topics (see Appendix 8) are also completed. Although the current Bachelor of Applied Management (Accounting major) satisfies these requirements, there are some students either from overseas or who have completed degrees in New Zealand, who have not completed all the learning outcomes required in order to continue on to become a Chartered Accountant and/or a Certified Practising Accountant. The aim of this programme is to meet their study requirements.
Graduate profile
Graduates will have the following capabilities:
a high level of competence of the body of knowledge as determined by the NZICA (CAANZ) SLOs and CPA Australia at the advanced levels
an understanding and appreciation of current issues and debates in the areas of accounting, auditing, law and taxation
be able to carry out accounting work in accordance with the relevant technical and professional standards
be able to integrate theory with critical analysis to apply and solve financial problems
be able to understand and apply the use of information systems and the changing role of the accountant in relation to information systems
have both personal and professional integrity and an awareness of the requirements of ethical behaviour
be able to access, analyse, evaluate and use information to support and contribute towards effective financial and strategic decision-making of a business
be able to demonstrate self-confidence, self-responsibility, accountability and initiative
be ready to commence the study pathway for the NZICA (CAANZ) or CPA Australia professional competence examinations
be able to pursue appropriate post-graduate studies

Entry Requirements
Applicants must meet the following entry requirements:
Academic entry requirement
Successfully completed a bachelor's degree and have basic accounting knowledge.
AND
Evidence of current knowledge of Accounting at an introductory level.
AND
Have English language competence to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. Any applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 6.0 (with no score below 5.5 in speaking, reading, writing and listening) or equivalent.

Courses currently undertaken for the accounting major in the B. App. Mgt. will form the basis for the courses for the GDPA.
The specific courses to be studied by students will depend depending upon their study programme in their original degree, together with courses identified as requiring completion to meet the professional accounting body requirements. It may be necessary for students to complete more than one year of study (120 credits) in order to meet pre-requisite requirements for the level 6 and/or level 7 courses and to fully meet the body of knowledge requirements of the professional accounting bodies.
The Graduate Diploma in Accounting currently allows for no optional accounting or law courses at level 6 and no limits the range of choices at level 7 to two accounting courses and the Industry Project. The GDPA differs from this model by providing additional accounting and law options to meet the student's needs and the SLO requirements of the professional bodies.

Credits
