Strategic Purpose Statement
The Manukau Institute of Technology Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Teaching) programme aims to ensure graduates are desirable employees of choice and have the skills, knowledge, dispositions and self-efficacy to be professional, critically reflective, beginning teachers in diverse communities.
Graduate profile
The graduate of the MIT Bed (ECT) programme is professional, collaborative and relational with a sense of self, purpose, place, and of belonging; a knowledgeable, creative, effective and critically reflective, responsive caring teacher who is politically aware and contributes to a just, diverse and democratic society. The graduate of the MIT Bed (ECT) programme has a personal and professional philosophy of practice established through the critique of theory, socio-cultural and other influences on contemporary early childhood education in Aotearoa New Zealand. The graduate of the MIT Bed (ECT) programme has theoretical knowledge and practical skills in infant and toddler care and education and is an advocate for the expressive creative arts and outdoor play. The graduate of the MIT Bed (ECT) will demonstrate professional knowledge, skill and professional practice; in doing so they are: committed to Tangata whenuatanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership and inclusion in Aotearoa New Zealand appropriate for teaching children and working with families or whanau; including knowledge of and proficiency in Manakitanga and Whanaungatanga Principles and basic use of te reo Maori appropriately in practice committed to a collaborative, innovative and safe learning centred culture that meets the well-being and holistic educational needs of all learners, including those who have diverse learning abilities informed by research, feedback, critical reflection, collaboration and learning focused collegial discussions culturally competent and aware of issues of social justice which include respect, empathy, open-mindedness, sensitivity, compassion and acceptance when working with diverse communities conversant with Te Whariki early childhood curriculum, play -based and nature pedagogy, current learning and development theories, pedagogical approaches and principles of collaborative appropriate assessment methods

Entry Requirements
Be seventeen years of age or older at the start of the programme.
All applicants aged less than 20 years must have achieved University Entrance.
OR
International applicants must demonstrate that they have the equivalent to New Zealand University Entrance.
OR
Applicants who are 20 years of age at the commencement of the programme and have relevant life and/or work experience but do not have the minimum academic requirements, may apply for admission if they meet comparable literacy and numeracy requirements as those entering with UE.
English Language Entry Requirements
Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. All candidates for entry will be assessed by the ITE provider prior to entry in accordance with Education Council New Zealand/Matatū Aotearoa requirements.
Any applicant whose first language is not English will be required to provide evidence of their English

The programme enables student teachers to develop and extend knowledge, skills, understanding and dispositions both theoretically and in practice in the following areas: Manakitanga me te Whanaungatanga principles and practices; the professional role of the early childhood teacher and the value of a play based curriculum; the holistic nature of development from conception to six years; the principles of collaborative assessment and to reflect on their teaching; the expressive arts in order to foster their own and children's dispositions, learning and expression in the arts; infant and toddler care and education; to work with children to promote language, literacy, numeracy and science development in early childhood settings within Aotearoa/New Zealand within a critical pedagogical framework; examine their teacher identity and personal philosophy about learning environments and explore the value of being outside in nature; explore social studies as a means to foster their own and children's creativity, including the reflective use of technology; to research and improve personal practice in an early childhood setting; investigate and critically reflect on political, social justice and other influences on the evolvement of early childhood education in Aotearoa; and management and leadership practices within early childhood education and professional responsibility reflecting te Tiriti o Waitangi principles.
